A Franchise That Initiated Conversations The OMG franchise has always been identified with its fearless storytelling. OMG: Oh My God! (2012), featuring Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, addressed blind faith and the commodification of religion. It was a departure from the traditional Bollywood formula and triggered a great deal of discussion on the topic of faith, godmen, and individual responsibility towards things of religion.

And then came OMG 2 in 2023, when the subject and cast were rebooted. This time around, Akshay played the divine role of Lord Shiva to assist a father (played by Pankaj Tripathi) in fighting for improved sex education for children in schools. Though censored and contentious, the film was a box office success as well as a critical one.

Now, OMG 3 is in early development—and it’s already generating buzz.

Although the script is still in the process of being written, insiders reveal that OMG 3 will tread the same line as its predecessors: social commentary with a touch of satire and spirituality. Akshay Kumar and Amit Rai are working on themes that are modern and relevant. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, subjects such as mental illness, mob psychology, or even the abuse of artificial intelligence for religious functions are being written.

No matter what the topic is, the fans will receive a new, contemporary story that defies the norm—just as the first two movies did.

Who’s Returning? So far, Akshay Kumar has been officially announced to lead the cast. Whether Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam, who were the leads in OMG 2, would be a part of the third installment or not is not known. Casting would, however, be based on where the direction of the story would be going.

Akshay’s stint in OMG 3 is also a mystery. He was a Lord Krishna of today in the first one, and Lord Shiva in the sequel. Whether he does one of them again or takes on a new godly avatar, time will tell.

An Unapologetic, Bold Voice

What sets the OMG movies apart is that they are not afraid to speak about what most movies will not. The franchise does not fear taking on difficult subjects—rather, it leans in. And does so without being didactic. Rather, it approaches it through storytelling, comedy, and heart, all to impart strong messages.

Director Amit Rai, who directed OMG 2, looks determined to continue that tradition. In his interviews, he has insisted on the telling of stories with a message but also being entertaining—and with Akshay Kumar as his partner in this venture, the two look set to deliver on this promise.

When is it releasing?

As the movie is currently in the scripting and idea stage, OMG 3 will probably not be seen in cinemas until 2026 or 2027. But don’t worry, as soon as the plot is locked, production will proceed at a fast pace. Akshay Kumar is a workaholic and is known to finish films in a short amount of time.

Final Word

With OMG 3, Akshay Kumar and Amit Rai are going to carry on a tradition of socially relevant cinema that has the guts to speak out. In an era when content matters more than ever, this partnership could very well bring another blockbuster that’s not just fun—but also worth discussing.

Watch this space, because if these first two pictures are anything to judge by, OMG 3 might be another wake-up call.
