Taapsee Pannu Defends Her Role in Haseen Dillruba, and highlights the Essence of Feminism

In a recent interview, Taapsee Pannu explained why she often finds herself in debates with journalists and netizens who criticize her role as Rani in Haseen Dillruba. Speaking to Zoom, Taapsee articulated her stance on the true definition of feminism and the importance of a woman’s agency in making choices.

“Till now, when I’ve been playing feminism on the front foot, portraying characters that seek support against injustice, you come out and support. But you’re forgetting the right definition of feminism in films or a strong female character. It’s about the agency of the decision being in the woman’s hands. You are denying me that in this film. Whether right or wrong, the choices were mine, made under no pressure or circumstances. In Haseen Dillruba, my character was never forced to marry Rishu, to cheat, or to confront her actions. I was never pressured to stay with him. In fact, I was told that I could leave, but I chose to stay. At every step, it was Rani’s choice, and you’re telling me my choice is wrong. That is totally against feminism, which advocates that no one should dictate what a woman should or shouldn’t do. Feminism means allowing a woman to make her own choices without pressure.”

Taapsee emphasized that true feminism is about respecting a woman’s autonomy and her ability to make decisions, even if those decisions are controversial or unpopular.

Taapsee Pannu also addressed the backlash she faced from those who believe that strong female characters should not display traits they find problematic.

She remarked, “When I saw people criticizing me, saying that I talk a lot about feminism but now I’m portraying a character with flaws, they’re missing the point. They fail to realize that these are also my character’s choices. I wanted to demonstrate the real definition of feminism, which isn’t always about conforming to others’ views of what’s right. It’s about what the character feels is right for herself.”
