Pro-tem Speaker Rajendra Pratap Swain administered the oath of office to the newly elected MLAs, including the Chief Minister and Patnaik.

Oath-Taking Schedule

The oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected members will continue until June 19. The election for the Speaker of the Assembly is scheduled for June 20. This structured schedule ensures that all newly elected representatives have ample time to take their oaths and prepare for the forthcoming legislative session.

Traditional Floral Tribute

Following tradition, the Chief Minister and other newly elected MLAs paid floral tribute to the Mahatma Gandhi statue upon their arrival at the Assembly. This gesture signifies their respect for the principles and values that Gandhi embodied, setting a tone of commitment and dedication as they commence their legislative duties.

Election Outcomes

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a majority by winning 78 of the 147 Assembly seats. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) followed with 51 seats, the Indian National Congress (INC) garnered 14 seats, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) secured 1 seat, and Independent candidates won 3 seats. Remarkably, 82 of the newly elected MLAs are first-time representatives, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the legislative process.

Leadership Roles

Mohan Charan Majhi, as the leader of the House, will play a pivotal role in steering legislative discussions and ensuring the effective governance of Odisha. Meanwhile, BJD President and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is anticipated to be unanimously elected as the Leader of the Opposition (LOP). His vast experience and previous tenure as Chief Minister will be instrumental in providing a robust opposition, contributing to balanced and comprehensive legislative debates.

Disclaimer

The commencement of the new legislative session represents a pivotal juncture in Odisha’s political sphere, as both seasoned and novice MLAs unite to tackle the state’s challenges and aspirations. Traditional customs, like the solemn tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, reaffirm the elected officials’ commitment to upholding principles of integrity and respect in serving their constituents.

As the Assembly convenes, these representatives embark on the critical responsibility of transforming electoral pledges into meaningful actions for the people of Odisha. The diversity among elected members, comprising experienced leaders and a significant number of first-time MLAs, promises a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives. This diversity is poised to enrich legislative debates and enhance the formulation of policies aimed at advancing the welfare and development of the state.

The ceremonial tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the Assembly’s entrance symbolizes a reverence for truth, non-violence, and inclusive governance—ideals that resonate deeply in Odisha’s political ethos. It sets a tone of accountability and dedication among lawmakers as they navigate complex issues ranging from economic growth and social welfare to environmental sustainability and infrastructure development.

Throughout the legislative session, the elected representatives will be tasked with navigating challenges, forging consensus, and translating their collective vision into concrete initiatives that benefit all segments of Odisha’s diverse population.
