When Odela 2 was released in April 2025, there was great anticipation. With a strong female lead (Tamannaah Bhatia) and elements of folklore and the supernatural, the Telugu film seemed destined for success. It didn’t. The film underperformed at the box office, critics didn’t care for it, audiences didn’t bother to see it, and it left theaters without much noise. But now the twist – Odela 2 has found interesting success on OTT. This also proves that sometimes all a story needs is a second chance.

How Things Went Wrong in Theatres
Odela 2, directed by Ashok Teja and written by Sampath Nandi, was conceived as a frightening supernatural sequel to Odela Railway Station (2022). The story unfolds in a haunted village where an inhumane spirit returns to haunt men and kill young brides, calling back a dark legacy. Tamannaah Bhatia plays Shiva Shakthi, who is a fierce Aghori and has devoted her life to Lord Shiva, sent to thwart the evil force.
Although the premise was intriguing, the film did not connect with audiences. It had a total budget of ₹25 crore and only grossed ₹7.07 crore in theaters. Critics reviewed it as “over-the-top,” “messy,” and “not coherent” despite many critics highlighting Tamannaah’s brave performance. Presented as horror-meets-mythology-meets female spirituality this storyline did not translate well to centers.
A Roaring OTT Debut
Everything shifted in a major way when Odela 2 launched on Amazon Prime Video on May 8, 2025. In the first four days, it reportedly managed to secure more than 100 million minutes of streaming, as per OTT insights. In the same week, it also secured 3.8 million views in its first week, overshadowing the 3.2 million views from Prime Video’s most recent Telugu biggie by 0.6 million views even in the first week of release.
This turnaround shocked the industry. A film that was being labelled a “disaster” only weeks ago, now climbed up to the second-most watched Indian streaming original between May 12 – 18, as per Ormax Media reports.”
What Sparked the OTT Success?
A number of factors helped Odela 2 shine on streaming platforms:
- Star Power: Tamannaah Bhatia’s portrayal of a Naga Sadhu, complete with intense visuals and powerful screen presence, drew renewed interest online. Her fanbase turned up in droves to support her performance.
- Curiosity After The Flop: Often, when a film flops at the box office, viewers get curious about what went wrong. The “so-bad-it-might-be-interesting” effect worked in Odela 2’s favor on OTT.
- Comfortable Viewing Experience: The film’s complex, ritual-heavy narrative might not have worked well in cinema halls but found its rhythm when watched in a more reflective, at-home setting.
- Spiritual and Mythical Undertones: The themes of reincarnation, moksha, and spiritual justice, while a niche cinematic offering, often resonate well with digital audiences who enjoy genre experimentation.
What We Can Learn from the Turnaround
Odela 2 is a blatant example of how a stage performance doesn’t necessarily define how a film will go. The emergence of streaming gives a movie that may not have performed well in theatres, is given a life again. For producers and actors, it’s a lesson to worry less about weekend numbers. For audiences, it’s a chance to discover the unexpected pleasure of a forgotten or dismissed film.
Tamannaah now has a new appreciation for her work, with praise coming in for her “bold,” “daring,” and “spiritually fierce” performance. It’s also created interest for other female-led horror thrillers in South Indian cinema.
Odela 2 went from box office cautionary tale to digital darling. While it may not have set records in theatres, on streaming it roared louder than anyone bargained for. And at the center of it all, is Tamannaah Bhatia — a star who simply never wanted to let a story go unheard, just waiting for the right platform to be shared.
