Director Nag Ashwin recently shared his profound experience of directing cinematic legends Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in his latest project, marking their reunion after the 1985 film “Geraftaar.” In an interview with Film Companion, Nag conveyed his deep sense of humility and awe at the opportunity to guide such iconic figures in Indian cinema.

Nag admitted that the prospect of directing Bachchan and Haasan was both exhilarating and daunting. He expressed a sense of uncertainty about providing direction to actors of their caliber, acknowledging their vast experience and unparalleled expertise. “It’s like telling the sun how to shine,” he remarked, highlighting the reverence he holds for their craft.

Despite his initial apprehensions, Nag described the experience as an enriching learning journey. He praised both actors for their professionalism, dedication, and openness to collaboration. Nag emphasized that their willingness to embrace his vision made the process smoother and more fulfilling. He shared moments of awe watching them perform, noting the effortless chemistry and profound depth they brought to their roles.

Nag Ashwin’s reflections underscore the unique challenge and honor of directing two of Indian cinema’s greatest talents. His candid admission of feeling unsure about directing them highlights his respect for their legendary status while also celebrating the collaborative spirit that made the project a memorable and enriching experience.

“I have no idea how to direct Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. It seemed absurd to instruct them on acting, especially Mr. Bachchan,” Nag remarked candidly. He recounted his nervousness on the first day of shooting, where his lack of recent experience added to his apprehension. “It had been about two years since I last directed anything, and suddenly, my first task was directing Amitabh Bachchan. I was at a loss for words. What could I possibly say? Maybe, ‘Sir, could you slow down a bit?’ It felt almost comical,” he reflected.
