Vikrant Massey’s latest film, The Sabarmati Report, has been doing a moderate business at the box office but could not regain its production cost yet. Let’s see the day-wise box office performance of the film after 24 days and why it mightn’t enter the safe zone.

Day 24 Box Office Collection
On its 24th day, The Sabarmati Report witnessed a small growth in its collections as it managed to collect₹86 lakhs, against₹47 lakhs on Day 23. This is a growth of 0.86% in day-to-day collections. Even though this is a small growth, the film’s overall collection has come down drastically with the approach of the last days of its theatrical run.
The film has so far gained ₹34.05 crores net in India. If gross collections are added, then the total now becomes ₹40.17 crores. It is still far behind its ₹50 crore budget and still has more than 30% of its cost unrecovered.
With a fixed cost of production for The Sabarmati Report at ₹50 crores, the movie would need to gross that amount to at least break even. As of now, it has netted ₹34.05 crores, and in return, it has just regained 68% of what the movie spent on budget, and therefore, this puts it highly unlikely to meet its remaining costs since its collection pace is slowly losing momentum at the box office.
Good Word of mouth, But High Competition
The Sabarmati Report had good word of mouth about its storytelling and performances at the time of its release. Critics and audiences alike appreciated the complex character portrayal by Vikrant Massey and notable performances by Ridhi Dogra and Raashi Khanna.
However, the timing of the film had a lot to do with its financial struggles. It had to compete against some big-ticket movies such as Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, which brought in huge audiences to the theatres. To make matters worse, Pushpa 2 awaited its much-anticipated release, causing a storm at the box office and taking away more attention from The Sabarmati Report.
Directed by Dheeraj Sarna, The Sabarmati Report is an engaging drama that recounts the tragic events of the burning of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra in 2002. The event, wherein 59 devotees died, remains one of the most shocking moments in recent Indian history.
The film tries to bring out the intricacies and human feelings associated with the incident, and it has been appreciated for its thoughtful storyline. Even though it connected with a small group of viewers, the film did not reach the masses, which would have affected its collection at the box office.

Why It Failed to Recover Its Budget
- **Huge Competition:
*The Sabarmati Report* came out on the same day as blockbusters Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, and the latter went on to storm the box office, leaving behind a couple of content-driven low-ticket movies at the box office. - Pushpa 2 Syndrome: The movie Pushpa 2 only made things worse for its prospects as everybody wanted to see this super-energetic blockbuster. Such a massive film gulped the potential viewers.
- Limited Appeal to Audience:
Although the film received critical acclaim in terms of performances and story, it did not connect as well with the mass market. That is to say, it did not resonate well with most mass-market viewers, who usually determine whether a movie has high box office earnings.
Despite its financial troubles, The Sabarmati Report has had its moments of success. It received positive reviews and won over a segment of the audience with its powerful narrative and strong performances. However, it is not a box office hit because it cannot recover its production costs.
The Sabarmati Report reminds one of how unpredictable the film industry can be. All-time good storytelling and acting can also become victims to timing, competition, and audience preference.
While the film may not have seen the kind of monetary success that one might have wanted it to do, this remains an admirable attempt at getting an important story onto the silver screen. As the end of the theatrical run comes with The Sabarmati Report, it will be more recalled for what it has done for the films rather than what it has managed at the box office.
